Rural Electives Program
  
Imagine Rural Medicine in west Northumberland
  • Our friendly rural communities offer time to explore west Northumberland County and our many recreational activities like hiking, cycling, sailing and golfing.
  • Physicians in rural communities welcome students to work alongside them through the full range of their practice, including time in the local community hospital.
  • Rural electives provide an interesting opportunity to combine family medicine with emergency, obstetrics, surgery, anesthesia and internal medicine. Students acquire a broad range of experience and skills.
  • Experience what it’s really like to be a physician who lives and works in a smaller rural community in west Northumberland County!
Clerkship Electives
  • Opportunities for 3rd and 4th year undergraduate medical students from all Ontario medical schools
  • Minimum 4 weeks in a rural community in Central East Ontario
  • Travel and accommodation funded to a maximum of $1000. Accommodation is arranged by ROMP (www.romponline.com)
  • Students can complete more than 1 elective in this area. Number of electives only limited by preceptor availability.
  • Access to personal transportation (e.g. car) is preferred as public transportation is limited.
  • Applications for clerkship electives are received at www.romponline.com
Pre-Clerkship Summer Electives
  • Pre-clerkship students (post year 1 and 2 Students) from all Ontario Medical schools
  • Limited number of summer electives available during June, July or August
  • Preceptors are Family Medicine Physicians in small rural communities
  • Stipend for accommodation and travel (up to Max. of $1000) – application for this must be completed online at: www.romponline.com
  • Applicants must have personal transportation as public transportation is limited in small rural communities. Awarded on basis of first-come first-served.
